Ethereum at the time of the Pectra upgrade saw great transformation in its infrastructure which in turn produced a 20% price jump to $2,200 on May 8, 2025. That day marked the best single day performance for Ethereum in four years. The market went wild for what we saw wide scale improvements to staking, validator operations and Layer-2 scalability.

At the end of May 7 we rolled out the Pectra Upgrade which brought in EIPs 7623, 7702, and 7691 to the Ethereum execution layer. We saw gas optimisation, smart account integration and also an expansion of blob capacity which in turn reduced Layer-2 costs greatly. We had a 22% drop in average transaction gas use and 18% in median fees, a great result for our users.

Validator structures grew more complex. Pectra update which raised the staking floor from 32 to 2,048 ETH saw large players like Coinbase scale down their operations. Within hours over 12,000 validators had increased their stakes. Also we saw that automated partial withdrawals which used to take 5.2 days now did so in 1.8, which in turn freed up $1.8 billion in ETH.

Boosts Layer-2 ecosystems

Layer-2 solutions quickly saw success. Consensys’ Linea reports a 63% reduction in proof submission times, which in turn increases through-put to 142 TPS. In the case of Arbitrum we see that they introduced smart accounts which enable $0.001 ERC-20 swaps, and within 24 hours had 84,000 new wallets sign up. These are signs the Pectra Upgrade is preparing Ethereum for main street DeFi scalability.

The network saw a spike in trading action. ETH/USD traded between $1,890 to $2,240 which also saw a 340% increase in volume. Binance reported 62% of that volume. Also, it saw large growth in Futures open interest which went up by $4.2 billion and at the same time had a shift in the bullish options’ skew which went from -12% to +9%. Also, $860 million in short liquidations took place which in turn pushed funding rates to 78%, thus fueling the momentum.

Attracts institutional capital

Institutional mood shifted. Min Jung from Presto Research reported that ETH’s low value at 0.02 ETH/BTC was a factor in the increased investment. Also, at the same time Nick Ruck of LVRG Research put forth that macro economic optimism which includes the U.S. and China trade talks and also what he terms as geopolitical hedging played a role in the rotation of capital to Ethereum.

Pectra update saw Ethereum perform better than altcoins and equities. We saw ETH dominance go up to 18.3% from 16.8%. Also it was reported that stablecoin flow into USDC grew by $5.7B which outpaced growth in Solana. In the traditional markets’ play the Pectra Upgrade showed that Ethereum outperformed Meta and Nvidia which is a reflection of growing investor confidence.

Environmental reports are mixed. We saw 37% growth in efficiency, but at the same time energy use went up 12% which we put down to staking activity. Also we noted that decentralization came under pressure, the top five validators now have 34% of staked ETH. At the same time Prysm’s dominance went down, which in turn improved the diversity of clients.

Pectra upgrade shapes Ethereum’s next phase

Ethereum is pushing for greater innovation in the coming year. We see a run up to $2,600 by June if spot ETFs break through. Pectra Upgrade also has the Fusaka update which will see blob capacity grow five times over; by late 2025, we aim for 100,000 TPS.

Regulators are aware. The SEC reports that Pectra’s wallet upgrade, which is a programming feature, may be classified as securities according to the Howey Test. In terms of law we are in a grey area as Ethereum plays a role in both infrastructure and finance.

In conclusion, the Pectra Upgrade demonstrates that Ethereum’s dominance is a result of improved infrastructure, which also enables institutional participation. Although scalability and decentralization must be put in equilibrium, what we do see is that Ethereum’s flexibility, innovation, and leadership in Web3’s development are proven by this upgrade.
