The Ethereum Foundation has seen a large scale internal transformation. It’s at a turning point in how they do blockchain development. On June 2nd, 2025, the Foundation renamed and reorganized the Protocol Research Development team as the “Protocol” group. This change, which is also a move towards simplification, isn’t without its downsides. Confirmed layoff reports exist, though the exact numbers are not made public. This transformation marks a significant moment for Ethereum Foundation.
For a long time, it had internal discussions which resulted in Ethereum’s core development teams’ focus on urgent priorities. The Foundation reported that it implemented the reorganisation to improve efficiency. It also aims at enhancing clarity of mission and strategic alignment within their growing ecosystem. The Foundation views this change as crucial for Ethereum’s long-term scalability and usability goals.
Ethereum Foundation Is Restructured Into Teams Based On Strategy
The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol team now focuses on three primary areas of development. The team will put extensive effort into scaling the base layer of Ethereum to include more users and transactions. They aim to achieve this without trade-off of decentralization. This also includes changes to validator processes and node overhead. The foundation of Ethereum’s strategy is deeply rooted in these areas.
Second, the new blobspace data availability layer is put forth by Ethereum Improvement Proposal 4844. They are still very much behind on this layer. Blobspace has rollups stashing transaction info much better, reducing cost and improving performance for layer-2 networks. This is especially important now, as the Foundation presents rollups as Ethereum’s primary scale-out solution for the near and mid-term.
Third, the Foundation is prioritising user experience (UX). In the past, UX played catch up to tech innovation in crypto. This was a problem for adoption. By dedicating talent to wallet design, onboarding processes, and developer tools, Ethereum aims to improve the user interaction with dApps. From the Ethereum Foundation’s view, enhancing UX is critical for growth.

In a structural reorganisation, the Foundation has promoted key leaders for its restructured focus. Tim Beiko and Ansgar Dietrichs are leading the base layer scaling efforts. Blobspace development and rollup integration will involve the work of Alex Stokes and Francesco D’Amato. Additionally, Barnabé Monnot and Josh Rudolf are working to modify Ethereum’s UX. They aim to make the protocol more user-friendly and accessible. This addition to the Ethereum Foundation’s leadership represents a notable shift in strategy.
In a significant step, researcher Dankrad Feist has taken up a role in strategy. He is working across all of the Foundation’s core areas. With his background in protocol design, it is expected that he will play a key role in scale-out and the blobspace project. He will also influence the overall UX as they move forward. They aim to see the health of public Ethereum and improve it long-term within the Foundation’s scope.
