Ethereum developer Barnabé Monnot has revealed a bold proposal:Cut transaction times in half from 12 to 6 seconds. The change is laid out under EIP-7782 as part of Ethereum’s 2026 move to Glamsterdam. This is all on speed, better confirmations, better DeFi interactions, reduced instances of arbitrage.

First introduced in late 2024, Ethereum developer Barnabé Monnot’s proposal sparked discussion on the Ethereum Magicians forum, with developers weighing in on the tradeoffs. This is a key element of Ethereum’s transformation into a global settlement layer. And if carried through it will make Ethereum much snappier at the same time not sacrifice its proof of stake consensus security.

Ethereum’s Tech Overhaul Push By Barnabé Monnot

Block proposal, attestation and aggregation have cut the slot cycle in half. Though they have done this they kept the core consensus the same, as confirmed by Ethereum developer Barnabé Monnot.

With the advance of scaling solutions Ethereum is seeing in 2026 an increase in gas capacity and in blob supply which in turn guarantees that we are ready infrastructure wise for the speed up. Rollups and Layer 2s will see quicker settlements and also validators will have to adapt to the tighter timing.

Promises Faster DeFi, Lower Fees

Shorter block times is a more smooth DeFi, a factor emphasized by Ethereum developer Barnabé Monnot. DEX price action will be more frequent which in turn tightens spreads and reduces risk. LP’s may see arbitrage losses drop by 50%  70%. Also traders which will in turn see less slippage on their quick trades.

Rollouts which tie to Layer 1 block times, as is the case with Base, will see faster finality. Also for cross-chain protocols with better performance in terms of quick confirmations and greater interoperability.

Network Concerns And Developer Buzz

Validators  in particular home stakers may face higher bandwidth needs. Faster slots may put weak players at a disadvantage which in turn raises centralization issues—a concern also noted by Ethereum developer Barnabé Monnot. The testing phase is learning from networks like Gnosis Chain.

Community response is divided but curious. Everstake has potential. As for others, they are worried about infrastructure issues. But with the 2026 Glamsterdam deadline still have time to balance ambition with caution.
